Day 21

Actors, and stage crew can be extraordinary teachers. I had angst, my birthday was coming up and I had no idea about the future. The world looked bleak now as then. My draw was to the Beatniks, and I was already going to the Village to hear poetry and listen to music. Sometimes I went with actors and then it was mostly to music bars where we sang well into the night. Other times I went with a friend from high school-who was another escapee to hear poetry- most- often it was Ted Joans-who later encouraged me to "Go Yugo" to Morocco. "About Ted Joans

Ted Joans (July 4, 1928 – April 25, 2003) was a poet, visual artist, and trumpet player. He was a Surrealist who was also associated with the Beat Generation. But, Ted was a true original, and his work defies categorization.

Ted’s artistic work was heavily influenced by jazz rhythms. A former roommate of Charlie Parker’s, Ted coined the phrase “Bird Lives!” upon Parker’s death." I just found a picture of him with those kind eyes..a tad changed but not much.
